Clinical nurse specialists or CNS provide an integrated approach to the healthcare system by implementing health care practices and influences in three primary areas of healthcare which include the patient, nurses and the healthcare system.
By focusing on all three components of healthcare clinical nurse specialists are able to observe how one area of healthcare affects another and influence positive changes in order to allow the entire healthcare spectrum to run more effectively.
Because the ability to affect change among these integrated roles and because of the fact that one role can significantly impact another it is important to look at these three areas holistically and dependent upon one another in order to be successful within the field of healthcare.
The patient: Clinical nurse specialists focus on patient care and the integration of healthcare practices among patients as well as the nurse’s ability to properly and effectively care for patients in need of medical attention.
Clinical nurse specialists may act also act as a coach and/or teacher by providing training and education to nurses and observing the nurses outcome in order to assist them with areas of struggle and improve their overall performance.
Lastly clinical nurse specialists focus on team dynamics and ethical behavior in order to ensure that everyone is able to work effectively and cohesively among one another while treating each other and the patients in an ethical manner.
The nurse: In addition to patient care clinical nurse specialists also observe the care, treatment and rights of nurses in order to ensure that they are receiving adequate R&R, obtaining quality training/education, and being respected and treated fairly.
Clinical nurse specialists may observe the relationship between nurses and other healthcare specialists to ensure that each employees needs are being met and look into healthcare policies and rules that may prohibit nurses from achieving their full potential.
As stated earlier clinical nurse specialists may act as a coach for other nurses and provide training and leadership in order to motivate nurses and improve their overall performance.
The system: Last but not least clinical nurse specialists focus on the healthcare system as a whole and the policies within the healthcare system in order to find ways to improve the care of both patients and nurses, eliminate unnecessary policies/rules, implement better policies and make the healthcare system more effective as a whole.
Overall the job of a clinical nurse specialist is to improve patient and nurse care while creating new policies and reforms within the healthcare system in order to create a more cohesive system and improve healthcare as a whole by increasing disease prevention practices, educating the public and nurses on the latest healthcare practices and ways to improve their health, improving the speed and effectiveness of patient care, reducing the stress placed on new and existing nurses and researching better healthcare practices and technologies in order to improve society and healthcare among creating other possible healthcare improvements.
